WILTON — A Wilton man was taken into custody Thursday night after an armed stand off with police.

The 24-year-old man, whom police did not identify Friday because he is undergoing psychiatric evaluation, barricaded himself in his High Street home when police arrived, according to a release from Wilton Police Chief E. P. Reynolds.

Wilton police went to the home around 10 p.m. after receiving a report of a domestic disturbance, according to the release.

“Upon police arrival, police confronted a husband and wife who were engaged in a heated dispute,” Reynolds said in the release. “The situation escalated and police were forced to separate the wife from her armed husband. The husband was armed with a handgun and engaged police in an armed standoff.”

The man refused to surrender his weapon, and locked himself inside his home, police said.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and the Farmington Police Department assisted Wilton police in setting up a perimeter and sealing off the area. Reynolds, who is an experienced hostage negotiator, led the negotiation process.

After several hours, Reynolds successfully talked the man out of the house, where he surrendered to police. No arrests have been made.

There were no injuries. The incident remains under investigation.
