PORTLAND — Dozens of veterans’ organizations around Maine are opening their doors to help veterans needing assistance with medical, education and disability benefits.

About 70 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and American Legion posts are offering help from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. People will be on hand to help veterans with the paperwork to sign up for benefits they’ve earned.

Officials say there are more than 150,000 veterans in Maine, but less than 30 percent of them access benefits to which they’re entitled.

Gov. Paul LePage has signed a proclamation making Saturday “Stand Up and Be Counted Day” for Maine veterans.
