LEWISTON — Police say they have arrested four people during an undercover prostitution sting in Lewiston.

Sgt. David St. Pierre says the sting was set up in response to complaints of a rampant prostitution problem in the city, with women approaching people and vehicles at all hours of the day.

The undercover effort was part of Operation Hot Spots, an ongoing operation involving several agencies, including Lewiston police and Maine Drug Enforcement.

The Sun Journal reports that the undercover officer began riding through the downtown area at about dinnertime Wednesday and was propositioned by four women between 6 p.m. and 9:45 p.m.

Each of the suspects was charged with engaging in prostitution.

Police said more arrests are likely.
