GARDINER — The pedestrian injured when he was struck by a pickup truck while walking across Brunswick Avenue has been identified by police as Willard Whitaker, 69.

Whitaker  was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with non-life threatening injuries, said Gardiner Police Chief James Toman. A hospital spokeswoman said Friday that Whitaker was not listed as a patient at the hospital.

The driver of the pickup, Sean Tobey, of Gardiner, was not injured.

The accident occurred around 2:45 p.m. as Tobey drove a Ford F-150 south on Brunswick Avenue, which is U.S. Route 201. Tobey was rounding a corner near the common when he struck Whitaker, who was in the southbound lane, Toman said. He believes Whitaker was crossing Brunswick Avenue at the time of the accident. Whitaker was not in a crosswalk, Toman said.

The accident is still under investigation, but charges are not expected to be filed, Toman said.

Traffic was diverted in the area for about 30 minutes as rescue crews tended to Whitaker.
