Former National Football League Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and his family are donating $50,000 to the group working to bring same-sex marriage to Maine, Mainers United for Marriage announced today.
Tagliabue, his wife Chandler, his son Drew and his partner Mark Jones, are giving to the cause. Tagliabue served as commissioner of the NFL for 17 years until he retired in 2006. The family has a summer home off the coast of Boothbay Harbor, according to Mainers United.

“My family cares about Maine and about the freedom to marry,” Paul Tagliabue said in a statement. “We felt we had to get off the sidelines and get involved in this important campaign in a state that we love. This fight for marriage equality is something we feel passionately about not just for our son and his partner, who has been a part of our family for 20 years, but for all loving, committed couples.”
Drew Tagliabue works at Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) in New York City.
On Nov. 6, Mainers will vote on Question 1, which asks if the state should be allowed to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
