BELFAST — Ellsworth junior Dan Curts edged Fryeburg Academy’s Silas Eastman by four hundredths of a second in a Class B showdown between Maine’s top two runners on a sunny Saturday afternoon at the cross country state championships at Troy Howard Middle School.

Curts leaned past Eastman at the finish line of the 5-kilometer race to win in 15 minutes, 47.52 seconds to 15:47.56 for Eastman.

The day’s only other runner to break 16 minutes was Merriconeag senior Jack Pierce, the Class C champion, who ran 15:57.41.

Massabesic in Class A, Cape Elizabeth in Class B and Hall-Dale in Class C each won boys team titles.

They will advance to the New England Championships in two weeks at Twin Brook Recreation Area in Cumberland, along with Scarborough, Lewiston and Falmouth.

For girls, Waterville senior Bethanie Brown won the Class B race in 17:56.32. Only one other girl – Class A champion Erzsebet Nagy of Lawrence, who finished in 18:50.87 – broke 19 minutes.

Bonny Eagle in Class A, Mt. Desert Island in Class B and Washburn in Class C all won team titles.

Joining them at New Englands will be Massabesic, Cheverus and Camden Hills.

The other individual winners were Cam Nadeau of Biddeford in Class A boys and Carsyn Koch of Washburn in Class C girls.

Runners with the top 25 times, regardless of class, also qualified for the New England meet.
