FARMINGTON — Rachel Clement scored the game’s lone goal on a header to give the University of Maine at Farmington a 1-0 win over New England College in a North Atlantic Conference women’s soccer quarterfinal game Sunday.

The fourth-seeded Beavers (11-6-1) will play top-seeded Colby-Sawyer College in the semifinals Wednesday. UMF outshot the Pilgrims 21-3. Beth Lebel made one save.

“We did what we needed to do to get the win,” said UMF head coach Molly Wilkie. “I thought we played really tough overall, and one of the biggest differences for us was that we got some really great contributions from our reserves today. They gave us a spark, and they played really meaningful minutes.”

Tricia Sardagnola stopped nine shots for the Pilgrims, who finish at 9-9-1.

Stony Brook 2, Maine 1: The Black Bears got on the board first when Waterville graduate Jordan Pellerin scored, but Maine was unable to hold on in an America East semifinal loss in Orono.

Kristin Baker and Sarah Darmanin each scored for the Seawolves (11-6-3). Ashley Castanio made eight saves.

Big TenChampionships: Madison graduate Matt McClintock ran a personal best 8,000-meter time of 24 minutes, 4 seconds, good enough for eighth place overall and just two seconds out of seventh place to lead Purdue to a ninth place finish.

The freshman was the only underclassman to finish in the top 15 and is also the first Boilermaker male runner to finish in the top 10 since 2005.

“Matt ran a superb race today,” Purdue assistant coach Dave Hartman said. “He went toe-to-toe with some of the best runners in the country and proved that he belongs with that group.”
