OAKLAND — An Augusta man who allegedly fled a car burglary scene bleeding and wearing one shoe Tuesday was arrested about an hour later, police said.

The man, Jesse Ray Hanson, 24, of Court Street, was discovered inside a truck by its owner on Fairfield Street about 5 p.m., Oakland police Capt. Rick Stubbert said.

The ensuing confrontation quickly turned physical.

“Blows were exchanged. Hanson sustained quite a blow to the head,” Stubbert said.

The truck owner attempted to restrain Hanson and shouted for passersby to call 911 on their cellphones.

By the time police arrived, Hanson had fled, leaving behind only witness descriptions and one of his shoes.

Stubbert said police at first couldn’t find Hanson, but he walked out of a nearby house about 6 p.m., where he was seen by officers who were interviewing others whose vehicles had been burglarized.

After Hanson was detained, police found that there were at least two warrants already out for his arrest. He at first gve them a fake name.

The full slate of charges has not yet been determined, but Stubbert said he will be charged with at least three car burglaries and assault for his part in the fight with the truck owner, who was treated for injuries.

Stubbert said that an ongoing investigation will determine whether any other charges will be brought.

Hanson was taken to Kennebec County Jail, where his bail was not yet set, according to Stubbert.

The items stolen from the unlocked vehicles included cellphones, phone chargers and loose change, Stubbert said.

Both of Hanson’s shoes were recovered in the course of the investigation and are being held as evidence, according to Stubbert.
