AUGUSTA — Investigators are still trying to determine what sparked a pair of fires several hours apart that destroyed a Spring Road home over the weekend.
State Fire Marshal Joseph Thomas said Tuesday that investigators were still conducting interviews and analyzing the scene.

The home at 283 Spring Road was damaged by a fire reported around noon Friday. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, confining much of the damage, which officials described as extensive, to the interior.
The remainder of the home was destroyed by a fire reported around 4 a.m. Saturday.
The home is owned by Norman Nelson Jr. and Rebecca Westfall, neither of whom was home when the fire broke out, officials said. Neither fire caused injury.
Augusta Deputy Chief Jared Mills said Saturday that Friday’s fire appeared suspicious, though investigators had not yet made a final determination. Mills said the second fire only raised investigators’ suspicion.
Thomas said investigators were trying to eliminate accidental causes, such as a rekindle of the first fire or an electrical spark.
“We have to eliminate all those accidental types of circumstances,” Thomas said.
