City man arrested on child sex charge

AUGUSTA — A city man was arrested on a charge of unlawful sexual contact Thursday in connection with a case that involves children, police said.

Joseph William Brann, 19, of 90 Mount Vernon Ave., Apartment 1, Augusta, was arrested at his home and charged with violating conditions of release and unlawful sexual contact.

Brann was taken to the Kennebec County jail, where he was being held without bail, according to Augusta Lt. Christopher Massey.

Police went to Brann’s apartment at 11:49 a.m., responding to a report of sex offenses. Massey said additional information was unavailable Thursday because Augusta police detectives were still investigating.

Another man, Jonathan A. Hanson, 36, whose address is listed as the same apartment as Brann’s, also was arrested on a warrant by police responding to the scene.

Police investigate Cony threat report

Terrorizing was reported at Cony High School shortly after 1:30 p.m. when a student threatened to damage the school building by burning it, Augusta police said.

The student was not arrested.

Police said they still were investigating the report, which was made at 1:31 p.m., and additional information was unavailable Thursday night.

At 8:27 p.m., a 14-year old was issued a summons on a charge of theft by unauthorized taking or transfer following a report of shoplifting at Walgreens on Water Street.

11:31 a.m., suspicious activity was reported at Walgreens on Water Street.

At 12:36 a.m., criminal mischief was reported at Central Maine Property Management on Penobscot Street.

7:54 a.m., a Melville Street caller reported burglary from a motor vehicle.

9:04 a.m., a crash on Hospital Street near the Bread of Life Homeless Shelter tied up traffic briefly. No injuries were reported.

10:16 a.m., a hit-and-run accident was reported on Eastern Avenue.

12:34 p.m., a past burglary was reported on Woodard Road.

1:04 p.m., a disturbance was reported at the Circle K gas station on Capitol Street.

2:56 p.m., disorderly conduct was reported on Water Street.
