HARPSWELL — The Maine Charter School Commission is scheduled to hear the application for a new charter school in Harpswell.

Harpswell Coastal Academy plans to open in September as a grade 6-12 school, but with an initial enrollment of 40 to 80 students in grades 6 and 9.

It is one of five charter school applications the commission will review Tuesday.

The school’s catchment area includes students residing within School Administrative District 75, Brunswick and Regional School Units 1 and 5, according to the 468-page application.

Joe Grady, chairman of the Harpswell Coastal Academy Board of Directors, tells The Times Record that they have a strong application.

Charter schools are funded with state dollars but operate independently of local school boards.
