BATH — Two gunshots were fired after a daughter interrupted what Bath police are describing as a suicide attempt by the woman’s mother.

Bath Police Chief Michael W. Field said police were called to a Central Avenue apartment late Monday night after receiving a report of a shooting.

Field said officers found two individuals trying to restrain a 56-year-old woman, who was on the floor of the apartment. Police said seven adults were in the apartment attending some type of social gathering.

The daughter, who is an adult, entered the bathroom to check on the well-being of her mother and found her holding a .25-caliber handgun.

A struggle ensued and two shots were fired before the daughter was able to wrestle the gun away from her mother. She was taken to Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick for evaluation. Police are not identifying the women.

It took police officers some time to determine what happened because the partygoers were intoxicated.

No one was injured but the incident remains under investigation.
