MaineGeneral gets $75,000 grant for peer program

AUGUSTA — MaineGeneral Medical Center has received a $75,000 grant to support a program to develop patient “peer navigators.”

The grant is a renewal of one from the Maine Health Access Foundation.

Peer navigators are people dealing with chronic disease who will be “trained and supported by MaineGeneral and leaders of chronic disease prevention programs to assist and guide other patients toward appropriate disease self-management and care.”

The foundation, www.mehaf.org, recently awarded $1.54 million in grants and renewed funding to 11 Maine nonprofit groups “dedicated to overhauling health care delivery and payment approaches that reduce costs, maximize value and deliver better health to Maine people,” according to a news release from the organization.

RICHMOND — Bruce Berger of Augusta has been elected to a three-year term on the Maine Rural Water Association’s seven-member board of directors.

It’s the first time in the association’s 32-year history that a non-industry representative such as a water or wastewater superintendent or trustee has been elected to the board, according to Kirsten Hebert, deputy director of the Maine Rural Water Association.

Berger, who is a senior associate with Wright-Pierce, a Topsham engineering firm that works for some member utilities, served on the board of directors of the Augusta Water District from 1994 to 2003.

The association is headquartered in Richmond and its website, www.mainerwa.org, describes it as a nonprofit organization that aims to represent rural water and wastewater systems in Maine.
