FAYETTE — Residents will get to weigh in on buying high-resolution photos of the town’s topography at a special Town Meeting.

Selectmen are recommending residents approve $6,000 for 6-inch resolution photos known as orthoimagery.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Fayette Central School.

The purchase will piggy-back on a countywide purchase from Maine Geolibrary Orthoimagery Program, which is looking at updating images of the state, region by region. While Kennebec County is purchasing 2-foot resolution imagery, Fayette will get a clloser look at its town if the purchase is approved.

“The benefit is more specific boundary imagery accuracy,” said Mark Robinson, Fayette’s town manager. Fayette is bordered by Franklin County on the north and Androscoggin County on the west.

Robinson said it would give code enforcement officers a better degree of accuracy with regard to buildings in resource protection areas and building potential outside of those areas.

The warrant article calls for the purchase of Level 2, 6-inch resolution imagery, which is $4,000 less than the Level 1 imagery that had also been considered.

“The picture is a little more accurate with Level 1 as opposed to Level 2,” said Joseph Young, mapping coordinator with the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s Floodplain Management Program. “The resolution is going to be the same; the quality of the image is going to be the same; the difference comes in the horizontal accuracy. The difference comes in number of reference points on the ground. The map is not quite as accurate as it would have been.”

In the photos, 1 inch equals 100 feet, said Young, who is also chairman of the town’s board of selectmen.
