The Mt. Abram girls basketball team isn’t what it thought it would be at this time last season. Some players didn’t come out for the team, and two others quit during the season. That’s left Mt. Abram with six varsity players.

Mt. Abram coach Doug Lisherness says he calls up two or three players from the junior varsity team from each game. Those players are inexperienced, so Lisherness is going mainly with his varsity players.

The Roadrunners’ game against Madison was snowed out Wednesday and will made up today, meaning Mt. Abram will have back-to-back games. Senior forward Jill Howard was sick Wednesday.

“I’m probably not going to have her for Madison,” Lisherness said. “So I’m probably going to be down to five girls.”

Senior forward Miranda Smith is also banged up with foot and back issues. Smith is still a consistent scorer, and one of the top rebounders in the Mountain Valley Conference.

“She plays most of the game, but she’s in a lot of pain out there,” Lisherness said.

Through all this, the Roadrunners are 6-5, and in seventh place in the Western C Heal points. Three of their losses are by a combined nine points, and Lisherness said the team is playing better lately. He also said the remaining players are handling the adversity well.

“They never complain about it,” he said. “They’re working hard.”

Nokomis hosts Leavitt in what should be one of the best games on tonight’s schedule. Nokomis comes in at 9-1, while the Hornets are 10-1. The regular season meetings between the teams in each of the last two seasons have been classics.

This game will be a little different, because Leavitt will be missing star guard Kristen Anderson, who will play at the University of New Hampshire next season. Tammy Anderson, Leavitt’s coach and Kristen’s mother, said Kristen is recovering from a badly sprained ankle. Tammy Anderson said Leavitt hopes to have Kristen re-evaluated and ready by next Friday.

“Right now, she’s 50 percent,” Tammy Anderson said.

For the Warriors, their closest wins — over Gardiner and Maranacook — and their loss to Oceanside have all been on the road, so this is a chance for the Nokomis fans to see a big game in Newport.

“When we play Nokomis, it’s always a hard-fought battle, with a lot of class involved,” Tammy Anderson said. “We always look forward to playing Nokomis.”

Mt. Blue senior forward Jaycee Jenckes was honored in a ceremony before Tuesday night’s game with Mt. Ararat. Jenckes has been helping Mt. Blue’s middle school team, and Mt. Blue coach Tom Philbrick said those players and middle school coach Larry Donald wanted to recognize that.

“She’s gone down and she’s working with the middle school girls and trying to help the team,” Philbrick said. “She does conditioning with them. She’s just going above and beyond, as Jaycee does.”

Jenckes played a solid game as Mt. Blue defeated previously unbeaten Mt. Ararat, 58-47. She was 3 for 3 from the field and finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
