Winthrop man arrested at  hospital following altercation

WINTHROP — Police arrested Gilbert Lee Gagne, 46, of Winthrop, early Wednesday morning at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta after taking him there for treatment.

Police had responded to a report of a family fight on Winthrop Center Road, where they found Gagne in the basement.

“Officers ended up finding him hiding in the basement by following a blood trail,” Winthrop Police Chief Joseph Young said Thursday. “He was injured when he broke into his own house.”

Young said they brought Gagne to the Augusta hospital for treatment before arresting him.

Gagne made an initial appearance via video link in Waterville District Court and is being held in the Kennebec County jail in lieu of $2,560 bail on charges of domestic-violence assault and obstructing report of a crime. He also is being held without bail on a charge of violating probation.

Hallowell’s newest cruiser in accident

HALLOWELL — The city’s newest police cruiser sustained minor damage in a traffic accident early Thursday on Water Street in front of Bolley’s Famous Franks.

Police Chief Eric Nason said the damage estimate was more than $1,100, and the cruiser remains operable.

Nason said Hallowell Police Officer William Ellis was driving the 2013 black Ford sedan south on Water Street when he saw something on the left side. He stopped, and as he backed up for another look, someone backed out of a private driveway and the two vehicles collided.

The cruiser was damaged on the rear of the passenger side, and the other vehicle sustained damage on the driver’s side rear panel, Nason said.

A Kennebec Sheriff’s Office deputy investigated the crash. The deputy’s report was incomplete as of early Thursday afternoon, according to Chief Deputy Everett Flannery.

Nason said he requested a damage estimate from the other vehicle owner. No citations were issued.

The most recent previous accident involving a Hallowell police cruiser occurred in December 2010.
