WAYNE — A Jefferson man escaped injury Monday when his tractor-trailer loaded with wood chips overturned on Main Street.

Francis Plourde, 64, was not hurt in the accident, which occurred around 1 p.m. just north of Wayne Village on Route 133.

Crews spent several hours unloading the chips so the truck could be righted and taken away, said Sgt. Scott Taylor, of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred as Plourde drove the 18-wheeler, a 1992 Peterbilt owned by Jefferson-based American Container Corp, toward Jay. Plourde crested a hill and entered a straight section where vehicles usually pass his truck, Taylor said. Plourde looked in his mirror for passing cars and the truck drifted onto the shoulder of the road, Taylor said.

“He got off in the shoulder and the snow sucked him right in,” Taylor said. The truck overturned on a steep embankment.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection was called to evaluate and clean a fuel leak that Taylor said totaled less than 10 gallons. Trooper Patrick Munzing of the Maine State Police’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement assisted with the accident investigation.

Taylor said speed was not a factor in the crash and no charges are expected.
