HALLOWELL — A local man was found dead Friday on the Kennebec River Rail Trail, the victim of an apparent gunshot wound.

An autopsy will be conducted soon by the Medical Examiner’s Office, but state police believe the death is not suspicious and probably was the result of a self-inflicted wound, according to Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The body of the 24-year-old Chelsea man was found around 11:25 a.m. Friday by an Augusta resident bicycling on the trail, and the cyclist reported it to police, according to Hallowell Police Chief Eric Nason.

The body was found on the section of trail between the south end of downtown and Greenville Street. That section was closed to the public for about three hours as officers from Hallowell and state police investigated.
