FALMOUTH — A multi-car pileup on Interstate 295 southbound finally was cleared at about 11:15 a.m. Friday, about four hours after it happened.

The crash was reported at 7:25 a.m. just north of Exit 11 in Falmouth. Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said one car spun out and five vehicles that were traveling behind then collided with the first car. In the aftermath of that crash, 13 other vehicles were involved in chain-reaction collisions.

Traffic backed up for miles as tow trucks were brought in to clear the scene. One southbound lane remained open, but traffic moved only slightly. Most of the traffic was diverted onto Route 1 via Exit 15 north of the accident site.

McCausland said one person was taken to a hospital by ambulance but the injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Dozens of other accidents also were reported Friday morning along the Maine Turnpike, McCausland said, especially in the Kennebunk-to-Biddeford corridor.
