Slick road conditions may be making travel difficult, but state officials say there are no plans to close either the Maine Turnpike or Interstate 95.
Maine Turnpike Authority spokesman Dan Morin said today he had heard rumors of people wondering if the highway will close, particularly after a 19-car pileup in the southbound lane of Interstate 295 in Cumberland, but Morin said “there has been absolutely no discussion” about closing the turnpike.
Ted Talbot, spokesman for the Department of Transportation, which oversees Interstate 95, said the highway will remain open. He said those with the longest institutional memory cannot recall the Interstate ever closing in Maine.
Both Talbot and Morin advised people to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary.
