WATERVILLE — The Colby College women’s hockey team beat Wesleyan University 3-0 to earn a New England Small College Athletic Conference playoff spot Sunday at Alfond Rink.

Maddie Dewhirst, Jackie Tavella and Megan Fortier each scored a goal for Colby, which finishes the regular-season at 10-12 overall and 4-10 in conference play. Brianne Wheeler made 27 saves to record her sixth career shutout. Her save percentage is up to .924 this season. The Mules have allowed just 10 goals in the last eight games and only four goals during the current win streak.

Wesleyan falls to 6-15 overall and 2-12 in the NESCAC. Ashleigh Corvi made 34 saves for the Cardinals.

Men’s hockey

Trinity 7, Colby 2: Jackson Brewer scored a hat trick to lead the Bantams to the NESCAC win in Hartford, Conn. Cory McGrath and Jack Bartlett each scored a goal for Colby while goalie Sam Parker recorded 37 saves. Colby is 4-14-3 overall and 2-11-2 in NESCAC play while Trinity improves to 125–3, 9-3-3.

Lyndon State 70, Thomas 64 OT: Despite a double-double from Winslow graduate Megan Pelletier, the Terriers fell in a North Atlantic Conference game in Waterville.

Pelletier finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds for Thomas (7-15, 5-11). Gardiner graduate Katie McAllister added 18 points.

Donna Lawson scored a game-high 28 points for the Hornets (6-15, 4-10).

UMF 70, Johnson State 46: Messaalonskee graduate Holly Oliver scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the University of Maine at Farmington to the NAC win. Teammate Lindsay Ranquist added 13 points and seven steals while Meghan Smith scored 10 points. UMaine-Farmington improved to 9-7 in NAC play and 9-13 overall. Johnson State is 5-17 overall, 2-13 in the NAC.

Wesleyan 46, Colby 42: The Mules were eliminated from NESCAC playoff contention with the loss to the Cardinals in Middletown, Conn. Diana Manduca led Colby with 14 points while Hall-Dale graduate Carylanne Wolfington scored six points and grabbed six rebounds. Colby is 8-15 overall, 1-8 in NESCAC play.

UMF 68, Johnson State 37: Maranacook graduate Ben Johnson logged his 15th double-double of the season with 23 points and a career-high 19 rebouds to lead host UMaine-Farmington to the NAC victory. Garrett Clemmer added 12 points for the Beavers (18-5 overall, 13-3 in NAC play).

Lyndon State 86, Thomas 73: Jason Gray had 17 points and 14 rebounds while Jose Fortunato had 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Hornets to the NAC win in Waterville.

Lyndon State improves to 10-12 overall and 9-6 in the conference.

Thomas (12-10, 8-8) was led by Jarrad DeVaughn with 17 points and seven rebounds. Franklin Salvardo added 17 points. Skowhegan graduate Levi Barnes chiped in with 16 points off the bench.

Wesleyan 73, Colby 47: Colby’s Chris Hudnut scored 13 points while teammates Ryan Jann and Patrick Stewart added 11 apiece as the Mules fell to the Cardinals in NESCAC action in Middletown, Conn. Shasha Brown led Wesleyan (12-12, 4-6 NESCAC) with 20 points. Colby is 6-16 overall, 2-7 in the NESCAC.

Softball

UMKC 9, Maine 3: Marlee Maples had an RBI double and Emily Ott added an RBI single to lead the Kangaroos to the win in the Subway Upstate Classic in Spartanburg, S.C.

Maine (1-3) was led by Kristen Koslosky with two hits and a run scored and Nikki Byron with a pair of hits and an RBI.

Also Sunday, Messalonskee graduate Mary Badeen scored 15 points, Cony graduate Courtney Dufour added nine and Lawrence graduate Devyn Curless-Clark scored five but Maine Maritime Academy lost to Colby-Sawyer 74-69 in women’s basketball action. … Lawrence graduate Brooks Spaulding had 13 points and eight rebounds and Richmond grad Marc Zaharchuk added five points and five rebounds as the Husson men’s basketball team defeated New England College 106-78. … Mt. Blue graduate Ben Russell scored 18 points to lead Maine Maritime Academy in a 94-84 loss to Colby-Sawyer. … Lawrence graduate Kelli Murray had nine points and five rebounds while Skowhegan grad Amanda Johnson added seven points in the Husson women’s basketball loss to New England College.
