POLAND — A man fishing on a Poland lake had to be rescued after falling through the ice.

Fire Chief Mark Bosse says the man walked about 1,500 feet out onto the ice of Thompson Lake on Sunday night to go ice fishing. While he was walking back to shore in the dark he tripped on a ridge in the ice and fell.

The caretaker of a local camp found the man in the water at about 8 p.m.

Bosse says 20 to 25 people from area fire departments, the Warden Service and the sheriff’s department used an air boat to reach the man. He was taken to Poland Regional High School, then flown to Central Maine Medical Center.

The man’s name was not made public and his condition was unclear.
