AUGUSTA — A man who police say was suicidal was charged Sunday after a brief standoff with police on Piggery Road.

The 40-year-old Augusta man was summonsed on a charge if possession of a firearm by a felon, said Augusta Police Sgt. Dan Boivin. The man was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta for an evaluation.

The incident occurred around 1:15 p.m., when officers responded to a noise in the area caused by a firearm or fireworks, Boivin said. Officer Nikolas Hample found the man sitting a car, holding a rifle.

The man initially refused to respond to the Hample’s instructions, Boivin said. Hample was eventually able to establish a dialogue and talked the man out of his car, Boivin said. He said about 10 minutes elapsed from the time Hample arrived to the man laying down his rifle and speaking to police.

Boivin said noone else was in the area during the incident.
