AUGUSTA — Mary J. Herman, of Brunswick, has been named the 2013 recipient of the Merle Nelson Women Making a Difference Award by the Maine Centers for Women, Work and Community, according to a news release from the group.

The award was presented at a reception held for legislators and donors on Tuesday at the Senator Inn and Spa in Augusta.

Herman is the principal in Mary J. Herman Consulting and the wife of Sen. Angus King, I-Maine. She has a background in teaching and a nursing degree from the University of Maine at Augusta, and has dedicated her professional career to advocating for Maine people, small businesses and nonprofits, the release states.
