AUGUSTA — Steven J. Williams, 32, of China, was acquitted Tuesday of an assault charge in Kennebec County Superior Court.

A judge granted defense attorney Darrick Banda’s motion for acquittal after the prosecution rested its case during the one-day jury trial.

“We didn’t even make it to lunch,” Banda said.

The complaint had alleged the offense occurred Sept. 19 in Augusta. Williams had been free on bail.

Justice Donald Marden granted the motion for acquittal.

District Attorney Maeghan Maloney, whose office prosecuted the case, said the case proceeded even though the woman who was listed as the victim of the assault did not come to court.

“It’s always the hardest situation for us when the victim doesn’t come to trial,” Maloney said.
