BUCKSPORT — Kaitlyn Bartlett socked a three-run homer and Emily Soule tossed a four-hitter as the University of Maine at Farmington defeated Maine Maritime Academy, 5-4, in a North Atlantic Conference tournament first-round game at Bucksport High School.

No. 5 UMF (11-13) moves on to the double-elimination portion of the tournament, which is scheduled to begin Friday at Husson University. The Beavers face No. 1 Husson at 10 a.m., Friday and will play again at either 2 p.m. or 4 p.m. that day.

Bartlett, a Mt. Blue High School graduate, hit her home run in the third inning, one batter after Soule reached on a two-out error. Haley Berry also homered for the Beavers. Bartlett and Shelby Bryant each had two hits for UMF. Soule, a Cony grad, allowed two earned runs on four hits and struck out five.

MMA (14-16) scored three runs to get within 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth, and had runners on second and third with two out, but Soule got out of the inning on a flyout, then pitched a 1-2-3 seventh.

Castleton 3, Thomas 0: Taylor Lively fired a two-hit shutout as the Spartans eliminated the Terriers in the first round of the NAC tournament, in Castleton, Vt.

Tori Fearon tripled, singled and drove in two runs for Castleton (16-19). Chelsea Crehan added two hits. Lively walked one and struck out seven for the win.

Janelle Ciomei and McKayla Gastia each hit a single for Thomas (10-24). Losing pitcher Faith Robinson allowed two earned runs in six innings.

Colby 10-5, Southern Maine 9-3: Aimee Polimeno won the first game in relief and the second game as the starter as the Mules swept the Huskies in a doubleheader in Waterville.

The second game was called after five innings due to darkness. USM had scored four runs in the of the sixth inning to take a 7-5 lead, but the game was called before the bottom of the sixth and rules state the game reverts back to the last completed inning.

In the second game, Colby (10-14) took a 4-0 lead thanks to a two-run single in the first and a RBI sigle in the second by Brianne Wheeler. USM rallied to get within one, but Tori Sansone homered in the third to make it 5-3.

In the first game, Meagan Lewia had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice for Colby.

Also Tuesday: Gardiner graduate Kaleb Smith had a goal as the University of Southern Maine men’s lacrosse team suffered a 6-5 loss to UMass-Boston in Boston. … Gardiner graduate Dalton Eldridge had two goals and an assist as the St. Joseph’s men’s lacrosse team lost to Emmanuel College 9-8 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference quarterfinal game in Standish.
