AUGUSTA/WATERVILLE — Two members of Maine-General’s Workplace Health staff have become Kennebec County’s first certified medical examiners qualified to provide physical examinations for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers.

Kevin Ward, a nurse practitioner and associate medical director of MaineGeneral’s Workplace Health, and Susan Cruz, a nurse practitioner, have completed the coursework and passed the examination to become certified and listed on the U.S. Department of Transportation’s national registry.

After May 2014, all CMV drivers who are required to be medically certified must be examined and cleared by a certified medical examiner. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rules require that examiners look at a range of conditions to determine medical fitness, including cardiovascular disease, respiratory and muscular functions, vision and hearing.

Ward and Cruz provide the exams at MaineGeneral Work-place Health locations in Augusta and Waterville. For more information, call 621-7550.
