AUGUSTA — The Kennebec Valley Humane Society said it took in 25 cats on Monday, leading the shelter to renew a call for adoptions and donations.

Hillary Roberts, executive director of the shelter, said the shelter has 125 cats in its care, 40 of which are in foster homes.

Of the 25 cats brought to the shelter Monday, 16 were from one woman who couldn’t care for them anymore.

“We have animals coming in every day in need of a second chance, but when 25 cats arrive within 24 hours it creates a huge strain on our resources,” Roberts said in a Monday press release.

The shelter has already waived adoption fees for all adult cats through the September.

Usually, adopting a full-grown cat costs $75, while kittens up to six months of age cost $100. That fee remains. Full-grown cats will also receive a free microchip — which can track a pet’s location if lost. That normally costs $25.

In early July, the shelter had 55 cats available for adoption. Now, Roberts said, there are 35.
