CONCORD, Mass. — A Sudbury man facing charges in connection with the death of a man who said he was extorted by reputed mobster James “Whitey” Bulger is back in court.
William Camuti is scheduled to appear Tuesday in Concord District Court for a dangerousness hearing.
The 69-year-old Camuti is being held without bail after pleading not guilty to attempted murder for allegedly poisoning an iced coffee he gave to Stephen Rakes. Authorities say Camuti owed Rakes money.
Prosecutors say Rakes and his former wife were forced to sell their South Boston liquor store in 1984 to Bulger.
Prosecutors say Camuti acted alone and Rakes’ death was unrelated to Bulger’s trial.
Police say Camuti also faces eviction from his public housing unit in Sudbury for allegedly running a business out of it.
