A two-story home on Brown’s Corner Road in Canaan was badly damaged by a fire Thursday afternoon.

Flames were showing out of the first story and spreading up a back wall of the residence when firefighters arrived on the scene about 3 p.m., said Canaan Fire Chief Troy Bowden.

He said the fire appeared to have originated in the kitchen and damaged that area as well as the second-floor rooms above it. There was also heavy smoke damage throughout the house, but Bowden said he thought it would be salvageable.

The homeowners were visiting relatives down the street when a passer-by reported the fire, said Bowden. No one was in the house at the time of the fire and there were no injuries, he said.

Property tax records show that the home at 776 Brown’s Corner Road belongs to Joseph and Pamela Hitchcock.

On Thursday Susan Thomas, of Canaan, said the home belonged to her mother. She said the family was upset and they were unsure how much damage the fire caused.

The home, which Thomas said is 24 years old, sits atop a hill overlooking pastures where the family keeps horses. It is on a winding road about three miles from Maine State Route 23.

Bowden said the fire was extinguished within about 15 minutes of firefighters arriving, but they remained on scene longer due to poor air quality problems in the house.

The fire drew a large response from emergency services, with four fire departments and two rescue units responding. Firefighters from Canaan, Cornville, Hartland and Skowhegan responded.
