WATERVILLE — The cause of a suspicious fire that heavily damaged a house at 5 Elm Court over the weekend had not been released as of this afternoon.
“As of today, we haven’t heard anything (from the State Fire Marshal’s Office),” Waterville fire Captain Rodney Alderman said.

The fire was reported at 1:22 a.m. Sunday in the vacant 2 1/2 story wood frame house built in 1900. Flames tore through the back of the house, leaving the porch a charred black shell.
Neighbors said the home, owned by a bank, had been secure before the fire and a gate to the entrance was locked so it would be inaccessible. They surmised someone got into the house and started a fire, either intentionally or inadvertently.
State Fire Marshal Joseph Thomas said Monday that his office was investigating the fire.
State fire investigator Stu Jacobs, who was working on the case, did not return a call to his office today.
Elm Court is a short, narrow one-way street that starts at Elm Street, near Domino’s Pizza, and turns into Belmont Avenue.
Houses on Elm Court are close together and neighbors were worried the fire would spread to other homes, but firefighters managed to keep it in check.
