RIYADH, Saudi Arabia  — Saudi Arabia says one more man has died from a new respiratory virus related to SARS, bringing to 42 the number of deadly cases in the kingdom at the center of the outbreak.

The Saudi Health Ministry said the 38-year-old man who died Wednesday in Hafar al-Batin city in the Eastern Province was also suffering from acute pneumonia, while tests of a new suspected case involving a 55-year-old man in the western province of al-Madina proved positive.

The new virus, MERS or Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome is related to SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, which killed some 800 people in a global outbreak in 2003. It belongs to a family of viruses that most often causes the common cold.
