PORTLAND — More than 52 University of Southern Maine students, faculty, and alumni affiliated with the university’s School of Music and Department of Theatre took part in the PORTopera’s performances of “La Boheme” last month.

The local students, some with solo parts, who participated, include Clare Mckelway, of Belgrade Lakes, wardrobe crew; Sable Strout, of Richmond, chorus; and Aaren Rivard, of South China, sang the part of “A Hawker.”

All of the performers had to audition for the chorus and roles and received a small stipend for their work, according to a news release from USM’s Office of Public Affairs.

Frederickson named

Kirschner, of Augusta,

makes dean’s list

BIDDEFORD — Nicole Kirschner, daughter of John and Catherine Kirschner of Augusta, has been named to the dean’s list for the 2013 spring semester at the University of New England.

A 2011 graduate of Cony High School, Kirschner is part of the university’s Bachelor of Nursing Program. She also participates in cross country and tennis.

receive scholarships

AUGUSTA — University of Maine at Augusta recently announced that Patrick J. Caskin Jr., of Litchfield, and Courtney Elliott, of Augusta, have been selected to receive UMA Presidential Scholarships.

UMA Presidential Scholarships are awarded to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance during their high school career.

Caskin is a graduate of Oak Hill High School and has been accepted into the bachelor of arts in Biology Program at UMA.

Elliott is a graduate of Cony High School and has been accepted into the bachelor of science in Mental Health and Human Services Program at UMA.

BIDDEFORD — Tyler Moody, of Augusta, has been named to the fall 2012 and the spring 2013 semester dean’s lists at the University of New England.
