WATERVILLE — Severe weather raced through sections of three counties late Tuesday afternoon, knocking out power to nearly 3,000 Central Maine Power Co. customers.
In Belgrade, 2,212 of the company’s 2,497 power customers were darkened, including the Town Office, where a meeting was conducted using a power generator.
In all, 2,883 CMP customers lost power about 5:20 p.m. in New Sharon in Franklin County and in Oakland, Belgrade and Rome in Kennebec County, according to power company spokeswoman Gail Rice. Power was restored about 6:45 p.m. Rice said she did not know what caused the outage.
Meteorologist Steve Capriola at the National Weather Service forecast office in Gray said heavy rain and strong wind popped up on the radar in locations north of Skowhegan and in southwest Somerset County, with others disturbances passing through Waterville and Winslow.
“We put out a special weather statement for strong winds and small hail,” Capriola said.
By 7:30 p.m., 80 CMP customers were still without power in Kennebec County, including 62 in Winslow and 17 in Benton. Farther south, 1,651 CMP customers were still in the dark in Cumberland County.
