PORTLAND — The lawyer for a 23-year-old man given three life sentences in a 2010 triple killing says the defendant was immature and was “played” by a skilled law enforcement officer during an interrogation.
State supreme court justices expressed skepticism Monday over whether Thayne Ormsby’s remark that “I’m going to have to plead the Fifth on that one” was enough to stop the interview. Defense lawyer Sarah LeClaire said police shouldn’t have “plowed onward” but justices suggested the situation wasn’t so clear cut.

Assistant Attorney General Donald Macomber said there’s no reason to overturn the conviction.
Ormsby was convicted last year of three counts of murder and one count of arson for the 2010 stabbing deaths of Jeffrey Ryan, his 10-year-old son and a family friend in the small town of Amity.
