VASSALBORO — A local man indicted on drug trafficking charges last month after reportedly hitting a female companion is back behind bars on new charges of domestic assault.

Shane Leslie Wood, 46, was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with domestic violence assault and domestic violence criminal threatening, said Maine State Police Lt. Aaron Hayden.

Wood, who was free on bail after being charged with hitting a female companion in July and subsequent trafficking indictments, also was charged with violating conditions of release. Part of those conditions prohibited Wood from contacting the woman he allegedly assaulted during a July incident, Hayden said.

Wood was being held without bail tonight at the Kennebec County jail in Augusta.

Hayden said police were called to Wood’s Crowell Hill Road home early Sunday morning after emergency dispatchers heard threats of violence and sounds of an apparent fight on an open line after someone at the home dialed 911.

Arriving troopers immediately found Wood on the property. The woman was hiding in the woods to escape further assault, Hayden said.

“She had also taken a large dog for her protection,” Hayden said.

Town Animal Control Officer Chris Martinez controlled the dog so paramedics from Delta Ambulance could help the woman, Hayden said.

“Wood was already on bail conditions for assaulting the same victim a few months prior,” Hayden said.

Wood was arrested July 8 by police responding to a complaint at his home. He was charged with domestic violence assault, domestic violence terrorizing, criminal restraint and refusing to submit to arrest.

A day later Maine Drug Enforcement Agents, as well as Maine State Police and Kennebec County Sheriff Deputies, searched Wood’s home and seized 8 pounds of marijuana, more than 1,000 prescription pills and more than 8 grams of cocaine and heroin, Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland said at the time.

Police also found nearly $6,000 in cash. Drug agents said the street value of the marijuana and pills exceeded $20,000.

A Kennebec County Superior Court Grand Jury in August indicted Wood on three counts of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs — oxycodone, marijuana and trazadone, alprazolam and cyclobenzaprine; three counts of unlawful trafficking — heroin, cocaine base and cocaine — and one count of criminal forfeiture of $5,750.

Wood has drug charges and convictions dating back to at least 2000, according to published reports. He was most recently sentenced to more than a month in jail and fined $400 for convictions in May on charges of terrorizing, assault and violating conditions of release.
