ARLINGTON, Va. — Former Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Hathaway, a World War II prisoner of war who upset Maine legend Margaret Chase Smith, has been laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
Family, friends and former colleagues including Rep. Mike Michaud, Sen. Angus King and former Defense Secretary Bill Cohen gathered for the funeral on Tuesday.

Hathaway died on June 24 at age 89 at his home in McLean, Va.
Hathaway served four terms in the U.S. House before running for Senate in 1972. He managed to defeat Smith, but then was defeated six years later by Cohen. After leaving the Senate, Hathaway served six years on the Federal Maritime Commission.
In World War II, Hathaway parachuted from a B-24 bomber in Romania and spent two months in a prisoner of war camp.
