BRUNSWICK — Brunswick used its relentless ground game to score on seven of its eight possession Friday night to become the Pine Tree Conference Class A’s lone unbeaten team.
The Dragons churned out 576 yards of total offense to roll to a 54-38 win against Cony.
“They got a really good run game,” said Cony coach Robby Vachon. “I thought our kids played real good defensively in the second half. Hopefully, we’ll see them again this season.”
The Dragons had to overcome a tremendous performance by quarterback Ben Lucas to up their record to 3-0.
Lucas completed 36 of 58 passes for 444 yards and threw six touchdown passes to keep the Rams (2-1) in the game.
“The key was staying the course, not getting beat deep and trying to make the make big plays,” Brunswick coach Dan Cooper said.
The Dragons played especially strong defensively during the second quarter when they forced Cony to punt the ball on two successive possessions.
Led by the running of halfback Lucas McCue and fullback Alex Bondouveres, who both rushed for than 150 yards, Brunswick built an 26-12 lead during the second half.
The passing of Lucas enabled the Rams to close the gap during the second half when he completed 21 of 25 passes. His sixth scoring pass cut Brunswick’s lead to 46-38 with more than five minutes left.
The Dragons cemented the win by marching 66 yards in 10 plays to scored the final touchdown of the game with less than two minutes to play.
“They made some great plays,” Cooper said. “We made a few more plays than they did, and that was the difference.”
