SOUTH PORTLAND — South Portland police surrounded an apartment building in the city’s Redbank neighborhood Monday night and arrested a man police say is wanted by authorities in New York City.

Raphael Encarnacion, 24, who lives in the Bronx, was being held Tuesday night at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn as a fugitive from justice and on a warrant issued by Auburn police charging him with operating a motor vehicle without a license.

Details on why Encarnacion is wanted in New York City weren’t immediately available Tuesday night.

Sgt. Steve Webster of the South Portland Police Department said his officers got a tip from New York police that Encarnacion might be living in South Portland. Encarnacion surrendered peacefully, Webster said.

Encarnacion will be held without bail at the Androscoggin County Jail until he is extradited to New York.
