VASSALBORO — The Winthrop golf team earned an automatic bid to the Class C state championship after winning the Mountain Valley Conference championship on a rainy Monday at Natanis Golf Course.

“We had a really great day,” Winthrop coach Lonney Steeves said. “We got a lot of really nice performances.”

Winthrop defeated defending conference champ St. Dominic 5.5-1.5 in a morning semifinal round. Top-seed Wiscasset sank Madison 6.5-.5 in the other semifinal.

The Ramblers then turned around and won the title by dispatching the Wolverines 5-2 in the final. No. 1 golfer Taylor Morang led the way, shooting a 36 against St. Dom’s and 39 against Wiscasset to win both his matches.

The Ramblers also received a boost from No. 4 golfer Zach Steele, who won both his matches as well. Steele defeated St. Dom’s Mike Bryant 3 and 2 and then edged Grant Hefler of Wiscasset, 2-up. Steele shot a 41 and 43.

“Both were by far his best rounds,” Steeves said. “He was outstanding. Those were big pickups for us.”

Anthony Owens also won both his matches for Winthrop, shooting a 37 against the Saints and a 45 against the Wolverines.

The MVC individual qualifyer is Wednesday, also at Natanis. The state championship is Saturday.

“Wednesday will be nice and relaxing,” Steeves said. “We don’t have to worry about getting the team qualified. We can just focus on the individual performances.”
