A 16-year-old girl suffered a fractured pelvis and possible internal injuries after she was hit by a car while on a crosswalk outside Nokomis Regional High School in Newport Friday morning, according to police.

The girl, whose name is not being released, is at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, said Lt. Randy Wing of the Newport Police Department.

He said a car southbound on Williams Road, which passes in front of Nokomis Regional High School, hit the girl as she was walking from a parking lot toward the main building of the school about 6:15 a.m. The car, which was driven by 32-year-old Miranda Robinson, of St. Albans, failed to stop while the girl was in the crosswalk, said Wing.

“She stopped immediately and rendered service to the victim until our officer arrived,” said Wing. He said the accident is still under  investigation but speed and alcohol do not appear to have been factors. He said Robinson did not see the girl and he was not sure whether she would be face any charges.

The girl’s injuries were not life threatening, said Regional School Unit 19 Superintendent Greg Potter, who said he spoke to the girl’s family. He said the girl had arrived at school early to attend a club meeting when the accident occurred.

There are two student parking lots, one on each side of the road leading to the high school, said Potter. He said the girl was crossing the road at a crosswalk from the parking lot on the opposite side of the road from the school. Wing said there are no lights illuminating the crosswalk.

The district will be looking into whether there are safety concerns around that crosswalk, said Potter.

“Hopefully we can avoid this sort of thing happening again,” said Potter. “We are reviewing what happened to see if there are steps we can take to keep everybody safe.”
