AUGUSTA — A New York man has been extradited to Augusta to face a charge that he attacked a young girl with a hammer in 2010.
Daniel Omar Cole, 36, formerly of Augusta, pleaded not guilty Monday in Kennebec County Superior Court on a charge of aggravated assault and remains behind bars in jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.

Cole was brought to the Kennebec County jail Friday after being extradited from Plattsburgh, N.Y.
District Attorney Maeghan Maloney said Cole injured a young girl with a hammer, and court documents indicate she was 4 years old when the alleged assault took place on March 9, 2010.
“She’s recovered but she’ll have some lasting injuries,” Maloney said on Monday.
A grand jury in Kennebec County indicted Cole on the charge on Feb. 11, 2011, but the indictment was sealed until his arrest.
Maloney said the girl’s family has moved out of Maine.
Court records show Cole was convicted in Kennebec County in 2006 of violating a protection from abuse order, assault, criminal mischief and violating condition of release. He was sentenced to 364 days in jail with all but 48 hours suspended and two years’ probation. At that time, he was living in Randolph.
