AUGUSTA – Cecil Munson and Dale McCormick were elected to the City Council Tuesday.

Munson, an incumbent currently serving his second straight term on the council, tallied the most votes in all four of the city’s wards, totaling 2,216 votes, or about 40 percent.

“I’d like to thank the voters of Augusta for their overwhelming support,” Munson said when the vote totals were posted at Augusta City Center after the polls closed Tuesday night. “I heard people say at the polls (they think I’m) the voice of reason. He listens to voters. I prize that. I feel the city is going in the right direction, moving forward.”

McCormick received the second most votes both citywide and in each ward, totaling 1,558 votes, or 29 percent, in unofficial results Tuesday.

“I’m humbled by the faith the people of Augusta put in me,” McCormick said. “I want to do a good job.”

Political newcomer Tom Connors, 56, program manager of the Maine State Forensic Service, received 997 votes.

Mary Mayo-Wescott, 73, a television producer and media consultant who served four terms as a city councilor in the 1990s and early 2000s, received 667 votes.

Munson, 76, is a retired chief of social work at VA Maine Healtcare Systems-Togus and owner of a computer consulting business.

He said during the campaign he prides himself on his service to constituents and said he was not afraid to go before the state Legislature to advocate on issues that affect the city and its citizens.

McCormick, 66, is a former state senator, treasurer and head of the Maine State Housing Authority. She resigned from the housing authority in March 2012 following criticism from Gov. Paul LePage.

She said during the campaign that Augusta’s neighborhoods have concerns ranging from too many sex offenders to commercial development which she said follow a common theme of encroachment into neighborhoods. She said the best way to address those concerns is for the city to set rules for development and planning and then follow them.

Councilor Dan Emery holds one of the at-large seats filled Tuesday, but did not seek re-election.

Candidates elected Tuesday in uncontested races were incumbent Patrick Paradis to Ward 3 City Council with 580 votes, Jennifer Day to Ward 1 Board of Education with 574 votes, incumbent Kim Martin to at-large Board of Education with 2,420 votes, and incumbent Katie Vose to Ward 4 Board of Education with 652 votes.
