WESTBROOK — A kitten that was put in a microwave oven in South Portland when it was 8 weeks old has been given a new home in Scarborough.

Named Miracle, the kitten was the center of attention at a press conference held by the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland on Friday morning at its Stroudwater Street shelter facility.

The League announced that Mary Byram of Scarborough was the winner of a lottery to adopt Miracle.

Two 15-year-old South Portland girls were charged with animal cruelty after police found a roughly 10-second video of the incident on Twitter in September.

The video shows one girl putting the kitten in the microwave, closing the door and appearing to turn on the oven. Police weren’t sure how long the oven was on.

The girls’ names haven’t been released because of their ages.

Each person interested in adopting Miracle had to fill out a survey and be approved by the league.
