SOLON — Officials are unsure what started a fire that destroyed an unoccupied seasonal cabin Saturday evening.

The Ironbound Pond Road cabin was already destroyed by the time firefighters arrived, said Solon Fire Chief Ronald Brown.

“It completely burned to the ground,” he said.

The fire was spotted by a neighbor who reported it at 4:21 p.m. Saturday. Fire crews from Solon and Athens were at the scene by 4:45 p.m. and were there for about two and a half hours, Brown said.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire or had been to the cabin in over a month, he said. Members of a Massachusetts family that owned the cabin, which lies along Ironbound Pond on a isolated dirt road, were notified after the fire and were in town Sunday, he said.

Brown said the Office of the State Fire Marshal will be investigating the cause of the fire Tuesday.
