ORONO — Martin Ouellette made 34 saves as the University of Maine dominated Boston University in a 7-0 men’s hockey victory Friday night before a crowd of 4,494 at Alfond Arena.

Freshman Blaine Byron scored twice for the Black Bears, who improved to 5-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in Hockey East action. They have won five of six games at Alfond a year after winning only two home contests.

The Terriers (4-6 overall, 2-3 HE) lost their third straight and fifth in six games.

The next time these teams meet, it will be outside in the finale of a Frozen Fenway doubleheader on Jan. 11th.

Maine led 2-0 after one period. Devin Shore scored the game’s first goal after carrying the puck down the left boards and shooting from the outer half of the left circle. Connor Leen and Steven Swavely assisted.

A tripping penalty gave Maine a power play for the final 1:48 of the first period, and contact to the head in the push-and-shove moments after a BU save sent another Terrier to the box, giving Maine a 5-on-3 advantage.

BU goalie Sean Maguire made several tough saves before Leen pounced on the rebound of a Shore shot and put it in the net with six seconds remaining for a 2-0 lead.

The Terriers had a chance at their own 5-on-3 power play midway through the second period, but couldn’t solve Ouellette. When BU defenseman Ahti Oksanen lost his stick while swiping at a puck near the top of the circle, Ben Hutton took advantage and led a 2-on-1 breakaway. Instead of passing to Shore, Hutton tried to slip the puck through Maguire, who seemed to stop the shot only to have it trickle through his pads and roll slowly across the line for a 3-0 lead.

The rout was on. Matt O’Connor replaced Maguire in goal, but Maine scored twice more in the second period. The first came after BU defenseman Doyle Somerby lost his stick and failed in an attempt to trap the puck against the boards with his skates. Freshman Cam Brown poked it free and sent classmates Morgan and Blaine Byron on a 2-on-1 break, with Morgan feeding Byron for the score.

The second came with four seconds remaining in a power play. Freshman Eric Schurhamer launched a slap shot from the left point and Morgan deflected it just under the crossbar for a 5-0 lead.

Bill Norman and Morgan both scored in the third period, Norman on a breakaway made possible by a poor BU line change and Morgan on a nice feed from Brown.

Boston University was 3-0-2 in its previous five games at Alfond Arena, where the Black Bears had opened the season with four straight victories before falling 4-3 to Vermont last weekend.
