WATERVILLE — Police were unable to find a man reported carrying a rifle near the Two-Cent Bridge Monday night.

Police suspended the search after an hour and a half because no crime had been committed and police had finished conducting a welfare check of the area, said Sgt. Alden Weigelt of the Waterville Police Department.

He said if a crime had been committed or a threat made, the police would have continued to investigate.

“We had a statement of concern, and they had the right to be concerned, but we had no laws that were violated,” he said.

Weigelt said the witnesses who called the police said they spoke with the man, and said he did not make any threats against them.

Weigelt said police consider the reports of the individual to be credible, because they had matching reports from two different callers, one in Winslow and one in Waterville.

“We had separate reports and the timeline and information was consistant,” he said.

The man was first reported to have crossed from Winslow to Waterville across the Two-Cent Bridge at 5:09 p.m.

State police, Kennebec County sheriff’s deputies, two Winslow officers and six Waterville officers aided in the search.

Weigelt said police from the different agencies searched until 6:25 p.m. around the Head of Falls area where the man was reported to be walking to.
