WINTHROP — Three people were hurt Tuesday when two cars collided on U.S. Route 202.

None of the injuries were believed to be life threatening, said Winthrop Police Capt. Ryan Frost.

The crash occurred around noon as Margaret Varney, 54, of Winthrop, drove her 1998 Plymouth van east on U.S. 202. Frost said Varney attempted to turn left onto Pineland Drive near D.R. Struck Landscaping Nursery and turned into the path of a westbound 2001 Ford Taurus being driven by 48-year-old Stewart Lucas of Hallowell.

Varney, the 15-year-old boy who was riding with her and Lucas, were taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, Frost said. Everyone was wearing a seat belt.

Traffic on U.S. 202 was diverted while crews tended to the injured and removed the vehicles, both of which sustained front-end damage.
