I just finished reading your Nov. 12 article, “45 years later, mom sees Augusta memorial of sailor killed in Vietnam,” about Gertrude Moinester, and I had to write to compliment you on a job well done.

I met Mrs. Moinester more than 20 years ago when I was teaching a high school course about the Vietnam war, and I asked her to speak to my students. The students were so enamored with her presentation that she was invited back year after year. She, in turn, invited me to the decommissioning of the USS Moinester, and I continue to stay in touch with her.

I was voted “Marine of the Year” in New York state where I live and was the keynote speaker on Veterans Day in my hometown. In my address, I continue to mention Lt. Robert Moinester, the ship and what it means to be a veteran today.

Again, I thank you for an outstanding article about a most remarkable person.
