WATERVILLE — Oak Street was closed down for the major part of Sunday after a water main flooded the lower part of the street near Drummond Avenue a little after 8 a.m. Members of Kennebec Water District were still trying to figure out the cause of the flooding at 4 p.m.

Water was pooling at the intersection of Drummond Avenue and Oak Street near Ace Tire Sunday morning after police were called to the scene a little after 8 a.m., according to Sgt. Lincoln Ryder of the Waterville Police Department.

Waterville Public Works and Kennebec Water District were called to the scene to determine what happened and the extent of the damage, Ryder said.

By the late afternoon, water district personnel were still on scene trying to determine the source of the flooding and reason behind it, according to Bob Durand of the Kennebec Water District. The water district did not know whether it was weather related or not.

The water had pooled up to about six inches to a foot in its deepest parts, Ryder said. The water district shut down the water valves after arriving and the water quickly drained. Some water had seeped into the basement of the 36 Oak St. residence, Ryder said.

Oak Street remained closed throughout the day and will remain closed until crews can figure out the issue and fix any damage, Ryder said. Before the flooding on Oak Street, Kennebec Water District crews were working on a broken water main in Fairfield.

“It seemed like it was a priority for them,” Ryder said.

Until the line is fixed, residents in the vicinity of the problem will be without water, according to Ryder.
